A large evergreen shrub or small tree, usually 5–7 m tall, with smooth grey-brown bark and even-pinnate leaves. It produces clusters of bright yellow five-petalled flowers through much of the year, followed by flat, thin, dark brown pods. It is widely planted as a hedge and roadside ornamental and serves as a host plant for butterflies.

Worth knowingIn Hawaii, where it is called kolomona, it has escaped cultivation at low altitudes and is now common on roadsides and in pastures.
