Dendrocalamus asper is one of the largest of the clumping bamboos, a giant grass whose culms rise 18–30 m tall and 13–20 cm thick. The immense new shoots that push up from the clump are covered in furry silver-brown hairs. It forms an open clump and is grown mainly for construction timber and for its edible shoots.
