A solitary, erect palm with an unbranched trunk clothed in old leaf bases and a crown of stiff, grey-green pinnate leaves. Male and female flowers are borne on separate palms, and a single female inflorescence can carry 6,000 to 10,000 small fragrant flowers. The fruit is the date, an oblong drupe with thick sweet flesh around a single hard stone; 'Medjool' is a large, soft cultivar that was formerly exported from Morocco.
