A small shrub or tree in the citrus family grown for its pinnate leaves, which are strongly aromatic when crushed and are a standard flavouring in Indian cooking. Clusters of small white funnel-shaped flowers are sweetly scented and are followed by glossy black berries. It is a host plant for swallowtail butterflies.
