An evergreen shrub or small tree in the myrtle family whose flowers have no showy petals; the colour comes from massed crimson stamens packed into erect spikes that look like a bottle brush. The stiff, narrow leaves smell of lemon when crushed. In the wild it grows in swampy ground, and it flowers in spring and again in autumn when well watered, drawing bees and small birds.

Worth knowingThe genus name Melaleuca comes from the Greek melas (black) and leukos (white), because the trees often have a black trunk and white branches.
