A medium-sized rosewood tree of the drier Pacific lowlands of Central America, 10 to 20 m tall with grey, fissured bark and usually of poor form. It partially drops its pinnate leaves in the dry season and replaces them with the rains, and its white flowers are followed by flat, winged pods. Cocobolo is famous for its oily, deep orange-red heartwood streaked with black, highly favoured for cutlery handles, inlay and musical instruments, and the species is assessed as Critically Endangered.

Worth knowingThe natural oils in cocobolo wood give it a fine polish and very high resistance to marine borers, but make it unsuitable for gluing.
