The sweet orange is a small evergreen tree, 6–12 m tall, with angled twigs, occasional spines and glossy leaves, derived from ancient crosses between pomelo and mandarin. The fruit has a thin, tightly adherent orange peel and sweet, juicy pulp. Navel types such as 'Washington' ripen early in the season, while 'Valencia' ripens late, so planting both extends the harvest over many months.
