The jocote or ciruela is a small deciduous tree of the cashew family with an irregular trunk, brittle horizontal branches and an open spreading canopy. Small pink to purple flowers appear along the bare branches before the leaves, followed by plum-like fruits that ripen purple, red, orange or yellow and are eaten fresh throughout Central America. It is one of the classic living-fence trees of the region, grown from thick cuttings pushed into the ground.

Worth knowingCultivated jocote trees rarely set viable seed, so they are propagated almost entirely from thick cuttings more than 6 cm across and 1.5 m long, planted at the start of the rains.
