An evergreen fig with a dense, rounded crown, smooth grey bark, milky sap and small glossy leathery leaves. Its most distinctive feature is the curtain of slender aerial roots that hang from the branches and, in time, thicken into pillar-like trunks. Small figs ripen pink to deep purple and are eaten by birds and bats; the tree is widely planted for shade and is also a popular bonsai subject.

Worth knowingThe hanging aerial roots that give the tree its 'curtain fig' name eventually thicken into stout pillar roots, allowing a single tree to spread sideways over a large area.
