A low-branching evergreen tree with a wide, dome-shaped crown and leathery obovate leaves. Its curious fruit is in two parts: a kidney-shaped nut, which is the true fruit, hangs beneath a swollen, pear-shaped fruit stalk called the cashew apple, which ripens yellow to red and is juicy and rich in vitamin C. The nut shell contains a caustic oil, so cashews must be roasted and shelled with care.
