A fan palm of the seasonally dry north-east of Brazil, with a trunk that keeps its old leaf bases in a spiral pattern. The nearly round leaf blades are divided into 40–60 segments and are coated on both surfaces with a hard wax, which is harvested by cutting, drying and beating the fronds. This carnauba wax is the hardest of the natural waxes and is used in car and furniture polish, food coatings and cosmetics.
