A tall legume tree of lowland wet forest and swampy ground from Nicaragua to Colombia, where it often grows in nearly pure stands. It develops a long, clear trunk and is one of the most important timber trees of the region, its light brown, straight-grained wood being used for veneer, plywood and joinery.
