A large, handsome tree with big glossy, deeply lobed leaves and a milky latex. It carries separate male and female flower spikes on the same tree, and the female spikes develop into large round green fruits with a starchy pale pulp that is cooked like a vegetable. Most cultivated varieties are seedless, so the tree is grown from root cuttings or suckers.

Worth knowingBreadfruit was the cargo at the centre of the mutiny on the Bounty: in 1787–89 Captain Bligh collected over 1,000 seedlings in Tahiti to feed Caribbean plantations.
