A slow-growing evergreen tree with peeling red and beige bark that bears its fruit directly on the trunk and main branches. Small white fragrant flowers cover the bark and are followed within a month or two by round, thick-skinned purple fruits that look like muscadine grapes. It can crop several times a year and is often kept small in gardens for easy picking.

Worth knowingSeed-grown trees take 8–10 years to fruit, but a mature tree can flower and fruit five or six times a year, straight from its bark.
