A small evergreen tree of the myrtle family with reddish young shoots and glossy, leathery dark green leaves. White flowers in the leaf axils are followed by small round fruits that ripen from green through bright red to dark purple or nearly black and are eaten fresh or made into desserts. It is grown both for its fruit and as an ornamental in parks and gardens.
