A woody climbing legume whose stems can reach 18 m, with trifoliolate leaves and hanging trusses up to 3 m long of luminous blue-green, claw-shaped flowers. In the wild the flowers are pollinated by bats, which hang upside down to drink the nectar. Pollinated flowers form fleshy green pods about 15 cm long.

Worth knowingThe jade vine appears on the reverse of the Philippine five-peso coin. At Kew, staff hand-pollinate the flowers; the first seed pods there were produced in 1995 after more than thirty years without any.
