A large, solitary fan palm from the savannas of Madagascar, carrying a massive crown of silver-blue costapalmate leaves each about 1.2 m wide. The silver colour comes from a protective coating of wax on the leaves, and the palm is highly drought tolerant. Male and female flowers are borne on separate trees, and its bold texture and eventual height can dominate a small garden.
