A tall, slender solitary palm with a smooth grey trunk ringed by old leaf scars and a crown of arching pinnate fronds. Panicles of small, fragrant creamy-white flowers give way to ovoid fruits that ripen from yellow to orange or red. Its seed, the areca or betel nut, has been chewed with betel leaf and lime across Asia and the Pacific for centuries.
