An evergreen tree of the myrtle family, a close relative of allspice, whose leathery leaves release a spicy fragrance when crushed. The leaves yield an essential oil that is distilled commercially and gave its name to bay rum, the traditional aftershave and hair tonic. It is a popular landscape tree in South Florida and other warm regions.

Worth knowingKew recognises five varieties of the bay rum tree within its native Caribbean range, and the species has been introduced as far afield as Hawaii, India and the Society Islands.
