A riverbank tree of the legume family, closely related to the guaba (Inga), found along streams and rivers from sea level to about 1,700 m. Its roots bind riverbanks, and in Colombia it is planted to protect water sources, shade livestock in silvopastoral systems and feed bees. In Costa Rica it is widely known as sotacaballo.

Worth knowingIn Panama it is called 'guabito cansa boca', the little guaba that tires the mouth, a name it shares with its relative Inga laurina.
