A spiny shrub or small tree of the acacia group that grows in the seasonally dry tropics of South America. Like its close relative the sweet acacia (Vachellia farnesiana), it belongs to a group of thorny legumes with finely divided bipinnate leaves and small, fragrant, golden-yellow flowers gathered in round heads, the source of the Spanish name 'aromo'.
