Areca Palm
Chrysalidocarpus lutescens H.Wendl.
FamilyArecaceae
EspañolPalmera amarilla
AlsoGolden Cane Palm, Butterfly Palm, Bamboo Palm, Yellow Palm
A clustering palm with many slender, cane-like stems ringed with leaf scars, and arching yellow-green fronds whose leaflets are held in a V. Stems, leaf stalks and leaflet midribs take on a golden-yellow colour, especially in sun, which gives it the name golden cane palm. It is one of the most widely grown indoor palms and, outdoors in the tropics, is often planted in clumps as a screen or informal hedge.
Sourced · see Record tab Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List; wild populations in Madagascar are reduced, though the palm is very widely cultivated. · IUCN
Worth knowingThe genus name Chrysalidocarpus refers to the fruit's resemblance to a butterfly chrysalis, and lutescens means 'turning yellow', for the plant's yellow flowers, stems and leaflet midribs.
