The New World counterpart of the African oil palm, a robust single-stemmed palm of wet tropical lowlands. It carries a crown of large pinnate fronds with fibrous spines at the leaf bases, and bears bunches of shiny red drupes whose oily pulp and kernel yield palm oil. It is native to Costa Rica and is used in breeding with the African oil palm.
