Spathodea campanulata P.Beauv.
FamilyBignoniaceae

AlsoAfrican tulip tree
A large upright evergreen tree with glossy pinnate leaves and a dense rounded crown. Clusters of fuzzy brown buds open into ruffled, bell-shaped flowers of orange-red with yellow edges, followed by boat-shaped woody pods that split open explosively. The soft, brittle wood breaks easily in high wind, and the tree is considered invasive in many tropical regions.
Sourced · see Record tab Least Concern (IUCN, via GBIF) · IUCN
Worth knowingChildren use the unopened flower buds, which hold water, as water pistols, and the opened seed pods as toy boats.
