Aceituno is a tree of the quassia family with pale, bitter-tasting wood and a straight trunk of good form. Individual trees are either male or female; female trees bear fleshy oval fruits that ripen purple, and the seeds yield an edible oil. It is most often found in seasonal forest on sandy soils and is valued for its light, easily worked timber.

Worth knowingThe wood has no visible difference between heartwood and sapwood, and although it has no smell, it tastes bitter, which is what the species name amara means.
