Acalypha is the largest genus in the spurge family, with over 430 species ranging from annual herbs to shrubs and small trees, and unlike most spurges its members have no milky latex. The commonly cultivated kinds are grown for foliage or flowers: copperleaf (A. wilkesiana) for its variegated bronze, red and pink leaves, and chenille plant (A. hispida) for its long, fuzzy red flower tassels.
